Is Everdell good for kids? Age and difficulty

You lead a group of woodland critters building a small city of cards over one year. Each turn you do one thing: place a worker to gather resources or use a location, play a card into your city by paying for it, or prepare for the next season to bring your workers back and gain more. Cards give resources, draw more cards or score bonus points at the end. Events and journeys add more ways to score, and the highest score after autumn wins.

What age is Everdell for?

Box says 10+

We suggest 9+ with an adult helping, 10+ on their own.

A turn is only three choices, which is friendly, but there are about 40 different card effects, colour types that fire at different times, seasons, events and journeys to track. Much of the game is reading card text and the index. A 9 year old can play with an adult helping, and 10 is when they can read the cards, plan their city and take being blocked on their own.

  • Hard to learn
  • 1 to 4 players
  • 40 to 80 minutes
  • About 10 minutes to set up (our estimate)
  • Competitive

Players can block each other. Players can hurt each other's plans directly. Content: A gentle woodland theme with cartoon animals and no fighting. A few cards are mildly mean: the Fool is played into an opponent's city to fill a space, a Dungeon holds a critter prisoner, and the solo rules have a rat that kidnaps one of your workers. The backstory mentions a war, and the deaths of a character's parents and a friend.

Where do these facts come from?

Age, players and play time come from the publisher. The difficulty and our age suggestions come from reading the official rulebook. We have not built a lesson or setup guide for Everdell yet.
