Is Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion good for kids? Age and difficulty

You and up to three friends play hired mercenaries fighting through a campaign of tactical battles on a hex map. Each round you pick two ability cards, whose initiative decides when you act, then you move and attack while monsters follow set rules. Cards you play are lost over time, so you must pace yourself or become exhausted. Between scenarios you earn gold, items, experience and new cards, and the whole team wins or loses each scenario together.

What age is Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion for?

Box says 14+

We suggest 13+ with an adult helping, 14+ on their own.

The guide builds up over five scenarios: initiative, attack modifier cards, conditions, elements, lost cards, items, perks and leveling. Every turn needs careful reading of card text, and a campaign lasts many sessions. A 13 year old can play with an adult helping with the rules, and 14 is when they can manage their own character, cards and long-term plan.

  • Hard to learn
  • 1 to 4 players
  • 60 to 120 minutes
  • About 10 minutes to set up (our estimate)
  • Co-operative: everyone wins or loses together

No direct conflict between players. Content: Fantasy combat. Your mercenaries and the monsters fight with weapons and magic, and characters who run out of health are exhausted. There is a boss fight against a Blood Tumor and enemies such as Vermling Raiders, Zealots, Stone Golems and Giant Vipers. Stories and artwork are dark in tone but not gory.
