Is Spirit Island good for kids? Age and difficulty
You and up to three friends each play a Spirit of a wild island, working together to drive off colonists who are spreading settlements and Blight across the land. Everyone acts at the same time each turn. You play power cards, then the game's own Invader deck explores, builds and ravages in a set order. You win by scaring or destroying the Invaders, and lose if the island is overrun by Blight, a Spirit is wiped out or time runs out.
What age is Spirit Island for?
Box says 14+
We suggest 13+ with an adult helping, 14+ on their own.
There are many connected rules: simultaneous Spirit turns, Fast and Slow powers, Energy and card plays, elements that unlock effects, a Fear deck and three Invader steps that each follow a land type. Power cards and Spirit panels carry a lot of text, and the rulebook itself warns that first games need a simple Spirit and a guided start. A 13 year old can join with an adult teaching and tracking the Invaders, and 14 is when they can plan with the team and handle the cascading Blight on their own.
- Hard to learn
- 1 to 4 players
- 100 minutes
- About 20 minutes to set up (our estimate)
- Co-operative: everyone wins or loses together
No direct conflict between players. Content: The story is about colonists taking over an island, told from the side of the land and its people. The rulebook opens with colonists killing the native Islanders, the Dahan, and the Adversaries are named real European kingdoms: England, Sweden and Brandenburg-Prussia. The Invaders destroy the Dahan, spread Blight and break the land, and many Spirit powers destroy Invader pieces or push them away. The backstory mentions foreign diseases and the Dahan mourning their dead. The pieces are small figures and the art is not graphic.
