Is Garden Getaway good for kids? Age and difficulty

Four animals race along a row of garden tiles to the gate, and each player has a favorite animal. On your turn you roll two dice and use one of them to push an animal forward or pull one back, so you move animals that are not yours too. The first animal out of the garden wins for whoever picked it. An older-players version adds tile effects.

What age is Garden Getaway for?

Box says 4+

We suggest 4+ with an adult helping, 5+ on their own.

In the basic game a turn is roll two dice, pick one and move an animal forward or back one tile. There is no reading, and you can move animals that are not your favorite. A 4 year old can follow it with an adult, and a 5 year old can play alone. The rulebook recommends its tile-effects version for ages 6 and up.

  • Easy to learn
  • 2 to 4 players
  • 5 to 10 minutes
  • About 3 minutes to set up (our estimate)
  • Competitive

Players can hurt each other's plans directly. Content: Cartoon animals sneak out of a vegetable garden before an angry gardener finds them. The gardener is only in the story; nothing scary.
